If we're comparing Alvarez's bat already to Harper's then I don't see why Alvarez can't be the next Piazza

if his bat is legit, let him learn another position while he's still young.

Because catching provides lots of wear and tear and will put lots of stress on his legs

If you have an elite bat, I think you want it from behind out of the plate

In this day and age of crazy offense, not a single catcher with 250 PA has a OPS over .900

Also pretty telling that only 4 catchers currently qualify for league leaders

They simply don’t play enough, so by having an elite bat be a catcher you’re limiting his plate appearances simply because he’ll need more time off

Most games Mike ever played was 152

And as soon as he reached 30, never over 140

Coincidence that your cutoff is 250 when Garver has 235 PA and a .978 OPS?

He’s on pace for less than 400 PA, that’s good production but wouldn’t you want more at bats

yes lets move a guy that profiles to be fat when he matures to another position.

he's 5'11" and 220 as a 17 year old, he's going to be have a ramos type body.

Maybe by the time he makes it to the majors the NL will have a DH so we can use him there when he needs a breather from catching and Cano will be dead.

there's a better chance of alvarez being a dh than him being moved from the catching position.

hammerhead, you're smarter than this. harper was moved from catcher because he's athletic enough to play the outfield. alvarez is already stocky and he's only to get bigger and less agile as he gets older.

i wouldn't move him off catcher... but I would have him play other positions every so often.

I preface this by not knowing if hes even capable of playing other positions but I sure would try

I would generally agree with the notion of moving elite bats away from C, unless they're also particularly talented behind the dish, for the sake of better preserving them and getting more annual mileage out of them. But at 17 in rookie ball, it's probably a little soon to worry about it. Let him keep working and assess things in a couple of years.

Steve (NY): The Kingsport Mets have some talent on the roster. Are you concerned with Batty’s Struggles? Is Francisco Alvarez the real deal? How has Junior Santos progressed? Are any of these interesting teenage hitters guys to keep an eye on?

Kyle Glaser: I would put very little stock into a just-drafted guy not killing it his first few weeks as a pro (if you want to have some fun, go back and look at Derek Jeter and Carlos Correa's pro debuts in Rookie ball). So don't panic on Baty yet. Alvarez does appear to be the real deal. The reports are good, the pedigree is good, the numbers are good, it's really promising. One scout commented he though Alvarez had a chance to be the best player in their system.
