That's a huge number, but not really a fair comparison because obviously contracts as a percent of total revenue have decreased substantially since that was signed.

My prediction is he goes to the White Sox for 7 yrs 210 mil. I think Harper ends up getting a similar deal from the Phillies after they are runner up. Those are the only 2 teams left that want to spend big money. Nats and Yanks have been too active on other deals to get involved in the big sweepstakes.
Wow, I was generous with my prediction.

If Machado signs for 7/175 and we weren't involved, we really fucked up.

I wonder if a real mystery team jumps in at $200m. God damn Mets could make a splash, but likely a team like LAD does some financial magic and swoops in to steal him.

C’mon Brodie...sack up and go big. Rosario+ can be moved for Bauer...and now the Mets are a legit playoff contender for the next 2-3+ years. I really like Rosario’s upside, but you bump him for Machado at that kind of contract.

Just means the Phillies haven't offered yet. They will blow that out of the water.

They know they will offer the most, but also have other needs. They don't want to bid against themselves and will allow other teams to set the market. They are going to be the highest bidder, there's no incentive for them to throw their ridiculous offer out there first when it may not take that much.

Teams would have less time to shop around for trades to find those pre-FA cheaper alternatives too.

Like the status quo here seems to be teams waiting out the more marginal FAs and getting them to accept less in late January when they start getting more nervous about their 2019 home, this eliminates that.

It would be good news for those 2nd-3rd tiered FAs and wouldn't really change anything for the 1st tiered FAs because Bryce's will always get paid regardless. They just won't keep clogging up a market with their indecisiveness.

There's an expression that deadlines makes deals, I think that holds true. Put people on a deadline and they'll rush to make sure they get something done before it expires.
Totally disagree. Teams already have more leverage and now they'd have even more. If you created a mandate that no player could get a 3+ year deal if they don't sign by the deadline, teams would 100% use that as leverage. It would almost be like collusion without actually communicating it, which has happened in this league many times before. You can still field a good baseball team without any one singular player...but a player wouldn't have anything to fall back on.

Why?

You side the with the rich old guys who did nothing but bought the team?

While the players who actually play the sport that we love to watch shouldn’t be compensated?
