I think with the Mets being locked in at a bunch of spots, someone like him with his versatility is appealing

He's basically a younger version if Ben Zobrist. The kind of player a team with a ton of injuries ever year should have instead of Jose Reyes-- a Full time bench player who starts. 75% of the time.

I don't have a problem with him as a jack of all trades rather than trying to shoehorn Dom into LF, Wilmer at 1B, or any of the other laughable conversions we've tried to make.

Zobrist was also a 117 OPS+ (.786 OPS) bat when he hit Free Agency. Gonzalez is a much less flattering 103 OPS+ (.737 OPS).

Marwin might play a ton of positions, but is he really valuable playing LF or 1B with a .737 OPS? His value is really tied to you putting him in a somewhat premium position. It's more like the Ian Desmond thing where the Rockies signed him and stuck him at 1B where he just doesn't hit enough to be useful there. I'd like the idea a lot more if he'd played more then 3 innings in his career in CF. He like, probably could do it, but it's all projection since he's never had to. Springer/Marisnick got all those reps over him.

A 103 OPS+ for a bench player would be fine.

We've been running out guys who might have sported a 103 OPS+ in the PCL.

Right, but we'd probably be signing him to fill which one of 1B/LF Jay Bruce isn't filling at any given moment, moreso then a bench guy. Maybe he becomes one when Alonso gets promoted, but who knows when that'll be.

Wait, wait... we're talking about the Mets here though. We hire him as a bench guy but really we're signing him as a starter because 1/3 of our lineup is wiped out by April 20.

It's just an essential way of approaching things if BVW is really serious about winning. Besides even those first 3 weeks he can easily slot into any of 5 positions and give 1 of each a rest day per week... or at least a reprieve from the nagging injury that becomes a DL stint after forcing them into the lineup.

It really isn't the worst use of funds if we want meaningful baseball into September.

No thanks, he’ll come here as a good super utility and end up stealing time from McNiell or Alonso or Rosario and play like Assdrible. He’s got flop written all over him.
