It's the same deal with the NHL draft.... and that is arguably as big an event as the opening round of the playoffs. It's certainly a bigger event than the AS game.

Probably the one thing the NHL gets right actually.

Maybe. On the other hand, Derek Lowe would be racking up innings for the Mets and Ollie would have turned into extra draft choices.

Well, in other sports players play directly out of the draft. In baseball, even the best players play a few years in the minors before they even sniff the Majors. It's rare for baseball players to reach the Majors in their first pro season or even their second for that matter in this era, there is just too much invested to rush these guys.

So it's hard to hype up a kid then hear nothing about him for 3-4 years then all of a sudden pick up the campaign.

It's not often that a player is drafted and jumps right into the NHL. Granted, it happens far more often than in baseball.... but still.

Who are some players that may drop that we might have a chance at getting? Perhaps some players who have injuries that teams may be afraid to take a risk on as well. You know guys with great potential but some injury concernes.

Keith Law has Donovan Tate (#5 on PGCrosschecker's board, #3 at BA) falling completely out of the first round due to signability.

I don't see it.

Bingo. Another reason why that was just a dumb move.

Except since I'm a Doctor, I know for a fact that had Derek Lowe signed with the Mets he would have needed Tommy John Surgery within the first 6 weeks of Opening Day, and Oliver Perez would be the new Nolan Ryan.

Plus we need $15MM tied up with Lowe during that last year when the current deals for Reyes and Beltran expire. How old will Lowe be that year?

C'mon Cage, even you know the combination price/length was prohibitive to this organization, Oliver Perez's supposed mediocrity be damned.

I would have done it. Wouldn't have been easy, but I would have pulled the trigger. 3 million more a season for the next 3 years for a legit #2? Even in his last year if Lowe declines somewhat, he will still be better than what Oliver Perez is now. Plenty of money coming off the books soon too.

And at the same time plenty of money due via extensions soon.

where will that local kid, the hard throwing lefty pitcher from ward-melville go in the draft?

the lefty from clemson, dwyer (?) or Bailey, the HS catcher who had TJ surgery may be good picks at 72.

Say it ain't so

Pete, nyc: Thanks for taking my question Klaw. Any idea who the Mets are considering in the 2nd round?

Keith Law: They're just hoping someone good falls to them, and I think they'll go over slot for such a player. It's just impossible to tell given how low they draft.

Quote:
Missouri righthander Kyle Gibson, the No. 4 prospect on BA’s Top 200 Draft Prospects list, has a stress fracture in his right forearm and will be shut down for six weeks. This obviously will affect him in Tuesday’s draft, when he was projected to go in the top half of the first round.
Maybe he'll fall to us but it is unlikely.

The mock draft on Sickels site has us taking Kentrail Davis out of UT, for whatever that is worth.

Those picks are made by Mets fans though, not people who actually have any inside knowledge.

We're taking a SP from the College ranks. Someone who we've already agreed to terms with prior to drafting him and the scout is literally sitting in his kitchen ready to sign the minute he's drafted. Then he's going to be shipped to camp, fitted with an outfit, work out for 3 or 4 days and be on the plane to Brooklyn to start the game in Brooklyn on Jun 19th against the Yankees. No if, ands or butts about it.

Speculation based on the way the organization operates and loves to take signable picks and stack their Brooklyn club, or do you actually have info on a prospective guy?
