Default Dont forget about Anthony Kay

Quote:
12. Anthony Kay, LHP, Mets
Team: low Class A Columbia (South Atlantic)
Age: 23
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 2.70, 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 11 SO, 1 BB, 1 HR

The Scoop: The Mets 2016 first-round pick missed two years with elbow troubles, but he finally made his pro debut this spring and showed increased velocity following Tommy John surgery. Kay’s season has been uneven as gets re-acclimated to pitching, but he was on the upswing last week, striking out a career-high 11 against Asheville while pitching into the seventh inning. Evaluators see a potential back-end starter in Kay. He just needs to stay healthy and keep pitching after such a long layoff. (KG)

Nothing really different between the blurb and Pickles' opinion. If you want to get excited about a potential back-end guy, go for it.

Could Kay run his fastball up to 96 out of the pen?

I wrote up Lugo in the Appy for Bullpen Banter and called him a potential big leaguer, which was pretty fucking ballsy considering he was a 30th rounder just out of school. Hell, he went by Jacob back then.

Kay’s stuff just isn’t very good for a former first rounder, rust or no rust. I slapped a 5 starter/swingman grade with potential to play up in the pen. I haven’t found one scouts take that differs from that either.

are the opinions from before or after the little velocity bump the blurb talked about this year?

He’s shown increased velocity since coming back. That’s how I read it. There’s a lot of misinformation. He was maxed out at 94-95 when I saw him and it was flat at higher velos. I’ll check around but don’t expect to hear a change.

thanks for the info, guy

I remember he was drafted as more of a floor than ceiling guy so falling back to a back end starter makes sense.

a 4th starter better than signing a jason vargas or a solid middle reliever without terrible splits as a lefty and I'd be thrilled

Don't you typically want higher upside from first rounders? (Even picked in the backhalf)

Mets think its cool to draft local guys in the 1st round even though better talents are on the board.

Just a reminder that anything out of the top ten in the draft is a crapshoot. Here's Kay's spot in the draft

So if they thought Kay was a guy likely to pitch in the majors even if his ceiling was limited then that's value at that spot

Not a prospect I'm going to get excited about (not even sure he's top ten in this system) but not going to get on the FO for taking him
