2009 MLB Amateur Draft (begins June 9th)

Kind of surprising how little draft talk there's been here, even with the Mets not having a 1st round pick. Here, maybe this quote will get you interested:

Quote:

"This is the best depth draft from the second to fifth round I've ever seen," another veteran director said, "and the first round's horrible."
I haven't been following the draft as much as I usually do, but I do have a PDF with 250 scouting reports. If anyone wants that, pm me an e-mail address.

As with the last few years, MLB.com is a decent source of free content:

Knowing Omar, he'll probably draft the entire Puerto Rican baseball academy.

Right, because our draft last year wasn't filled with a bunch of white boys from U.S. colleges, huh?

Dumbass.

Everyone in the world did think Javier Rodriguez was a major reach.

Metsareback 05-20-2009 09:26 AM

They should always go BPA.

And I wouldn't mind if they followed last years philosophy.

OlympianX 05-20-2009 09:29 AM

If last year was any indication, the Mets are gonna go with college players who can help in little time, while getting young talent from IFA.

Absolutely.

But in a draft filled with college kids - including three in the first round - it's an OK gamble to take a toolsy young kid and devote the next four, five years developing him.

i really don't care about "reaching" in the middle rounds of the draft.

if they like a guy, get him.

I agree.

Probably a poor choice of words to say gamble on my part. They liked him, they took him.

It helps my own comfort level, as a fan, knowing the three picks ahead of him appear solid bets to reach the big leagues and contribute.

Well, you gotta look at the log jam we have in some positions at the low levels... though some guys are playing out of position to keep themselves at premium positions. But yeah, you go BPA.

2nd round is not middle rounds of the draft.

Log jams are good when they involve short stops. Bill James talks a lot about how SS's can move to other parts of the field but not vice-versa.

Where is our first selection I know we lose 1st rounder for krod. Do we lose any other spots?

kanin81 05-20-2009 03:48 PM

Our first pick is at 72

BPA. Overslot! overslot! overslot! best HS players and college kids who are asking for the moon.
Omar can spend the 2nd half of the draft college kids who will be organizational players (non-prospects).

DaMetsRulez#1 05-20-2009 06:17 PM

Dammit...can we get the auto replace for overslot again please?

aye, but we have 8 ss for 2 teams, they have to move positions, Im just saying they will need to move some people if they draft two more SS.
