Santana Thoughts

By Dan | January 29, 2008

I’m still somewhat in a state of shock right now, so I’m going to break this up into sections and hope it all makes sense.

The Media
First off, credit must be given to the mainstream media for their handling of this long, drawn out saga. With all of the misinformation teams put out there, the media actually did a pretty outstanding job covering Santana. Many Mets fans were tired of hearing about Santana, but as the days started counting down, it was becoming more and more apparent the Mets really were in this thing. While it started off as everyone saying the Mets didn’t have the prospects to get the deal done, it’s apparent they definitely did. A lot of the media was also right about the Yankees and Red Sox not really being all that interested in the deal. It appears they both were just involved to drive up the price for the other team.

Omar Regains his Crown
I said after the Milledge trade that Omar lost a lot of the faith that I had in him, but this trade completely regains all of it, and then some. For Minaya to acquire Santana without giving up Fernando Martinez is in a word, amazing. It also makes me question what really went down in the Milledge trade, but let’s not get into that one again.

The Package
The Twins’ haul will consist of Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey, Philip Humber, and Deolis Guerra. The Mets’ farm takes a huge hit in this deal, but they still manage to hang onto their most prized prospect, Fernando Martinez. Mulvey and Humber are about ready to contribute in the majors right now, the Twins will likely push them faster than the Mets would to showcase their haul to their fans. Guerra is still several years away, and hasn’t yet made the biggest leap for a prospect in this man’s opinion: AA. It will be interesting to see how Guerra pans out, as many things can still go wrong for him. As for Gomez, he certainly showcased his blazing speed with the Mets last year. However, he too is still several years away from contributing at the major league level. It will be interesting to see how fast the Twins will push him. Gomez should be able to remain in center field for the Twins, something he wouldn’t have been able to do with the Mets with Beltran under contract. That certainly should lessen the pressure on Gomez to perform at the offensive level of a corner outfielder.

Santana
There’s not much I can say about him that you already don’t know. Anyone who follows baseball knows how great of a pitcher Santana is. Johan Santana, Pedro Martinez, Oliver Perez, and John Maine probably make up the best rotation in the NL, no matter who the Mets slot into the 5th spot.
