A Deal 2,012 Days In The Making
By Doug R. | January 29, 2008
As the dust begins to clear in what could possibly go down as the greatest trade in Mets history (Mike Piazza might disagree), we’ll take a quick look at back at how the Mets ended up acquiring a two time Cy Young winner:
July 27, 2002- Carlos Gómez signs with the Mets as an international free agent
June 13, 2003-Steve Phillips fired as general manager, Jim Duquette named interim GM
October 29, 2003-Jim Duquette becomes general manager of the Mets, losing the “interim” tag
June 7, 2004-Drafted Philip Humber
July 30, 2004-In a day that will forever be know as Black Friday, the Mets trade Scott Kazmir and Jose Diaz to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for Bartolome Fortunato and Victor Zambrano. A deal that will haunt Jim Duquette’s dreams and ultimately lead to his demise two months later
September 28, 2004-Omar Minaya is hired as head of baseball operations, Duquette demoted to vice president of baseball operations
July 11, 2005-Mets sign Delois Guerra
October 20, 2005-Duquette leaves Mets organization
June 6, 2007-Drafted Kevin Muley
September 30, 2007-Mets blow a seven-game lead with 17 games to play and miss playoffs
January 29, 2008-Mets trade Gomez, Humber, Guerra and Mulvey for Johan Santana
January 29-Februray 1, 2008-Mets reach contract agreement with Santana?
The chain of events has been a long road for Mets fans, but hopefully, after seven years of heart break, the Mets might have finally made the move to push them over the top.
One can only hope.
