Omar Minaya On WFAN
By Doug R. | November 30, 2007
Here are some bullet points from Minaya’s post Milledge trade interview on WFAN
•Came on around 4:30
•Talked to OAK and BAL and found out that they could trade Milledge without affecting other deals
•Ryan Church “will be a starter for us”
•Believes Church’s numbers will improve and a lot of the doubles he hit in RFK will turn into homers in Shea
•Improves the OF Defense
•Makes the team better as a whole with a very good defensive catcher
•Believes Church will produce similar to better numbers this year as compared to last year
•No Torreabla lawsuit worries, Minaya said he would not make the reason public why the Mets backed out since he had an agreement with his agent not to
•Moved past Lo Duca since he was not a defensive catcher
•Felt the Mets needed to change up from last year, this deal works with the idea of being strong up the middle defensively
•Knows he will give up offensive with Schenider
•Keeps reiterating the need to be strong defensively up the middle
•Is in contact with teams that are dealing pitchers, and the teams have shown interest in the Mets players
•Spoke to Wagner about his comments and gave him an idea of the plan for the team, but told him that he’s a veteran and needs to be careful with his comments
•Was able to sign the guys he wanted to sign (Anderson, Easley)
•Should have won more then 88 games
•Oliver Perez and John Maine will benefit from the trade
•”At the time we made the Benson trade, no one knew who John Maine was”
•”I like our team the way it is right now”
•Hopes they can add other pieces to the team by Spring Training
•Sees no one in the trade market worth Jose Reyes
•Believes its a good baseball trade on both sides
•Omar exits about 4:45
